There isn't a picture of this 'Stan' - but he apparently took the photograph and some people think he might even have made the art work - which has subsequently gone missing (and might be a portrait of him anyway)! You couldn't make it up, could you?
The art work is called "Self Portrait as Reclining Nude". It was made in 1982 and is (supposedly) by an American artist, Nat Essdee. His 'partner' at the time was a British photographer (strange how photography and photograhers keep coming up) called Stan Dickinson. He took this photograph of the piece. Nobody now knows what happened to the work and they both died of AIDS-related illnesses - Essdee in 1989 and Stan in 1991. The latter had subsequently claimed that the work was his idea and that it's actually a portrait of him. Now there's going to be a big exhibition of Essdee's work and this photo (it says it's the only surviving print) will be on show. Like I said, you couldn't make it up! |
